(St Catherine's) The Labour Day weekend is just around the corner and that means the start of the OCAA and OIWFA seasons are now rapidly approaching. Most college teams have already held tryouts, and trimmed rosters down where needed, while on the University side some teams have done the same and others will do so this coming weekend as athletes arrive back on campus for the fall term. Last Fall UTM provided weekly Top 10 Updates for the College/University scene in Ontario and we will once again do that in 2019. Here is a preview of the two leagues, and our first top-10 ranking list of the season.
UTM College/University Top 10 - August 29th
For those not familiar with the college/university scene in Ontario they play in separate leagues (with no cross-over, save for exhibition games). Both leagues begin play the weekend of September 6th, college (OCAA) plays a complete home and home round robin schedule over 5 1/2 weeks. University (OIWFA) plays a 16 game schedule and divides into an eastern and western conference. The OCAA awards playoff positions to the top 4 teams, while the OIWFA awards playoff positions to the top 8 teams.
The level of play has improved quite signifigantly in the last number of years, most of the athletes have Tier 1 or Tier 2 experience at the U19 level in Ontario. Games are played on campus when fields are present, and at neighboring parks when the schools don't have a softball diamond on campus.
As we mentioned this will be the first post this fall, but watch our website for updates throughout the next 5 to 6 weeks as we try to raise awareness and exposure of the game at the OCAA and OIWFA levels. Below are links to the league sites. The college site is pretty well done, however the university site isn't the greatest and really could use some improvement.
