UTM Power Rankings July 31

(Hamilton) It seems like it was just a few weeks ago that the season started, however it actually has been a solid three months of play (May, June and July) this past weekend we saw Provincial Championships in U14 Tier 1, U16 Tier 1, as well as qualifiers for U16 Tier 2. The week previous we had qualifiers for U14 & U19 Tier 2. This coming week provincial championships continue to take place at various locations, U19 Tier 1 wraps up in Brampton and U19 Tier 2 completes the season in London. U12 Qualifers run this coming wekeend as well at several sites across Ontario. This will be our second to last rankings post for 2019. For teams whose season has completed... enjoy the break before Labour Day when the whole process starts again, for those participating in championship events this week --- good luck!

U19 Tier 1

It is provincial championship weekend as the teams head to Brampton for the final event of the season. Heading into the event here is who we have as our top-10, and we have also made a little guess as to who we think captures medals this wekeend as well. Good luck everyone!

Rank Team Last High Low Comments
1 Brampton Blazers Murray 1 1 4 Bramoton is our #1 heading into the championship weekend. They will be challenged within their pool, but they should escape with the #1 seed heading into the bracket
2 Waterloo Ghosts Gold 2 1 2 Don't see anyone taking the 1st pool spot from Waterloo this weekend, they will be a bracket team likely getting there 4-0-0
3 Oakville Angels 3 1 3 Angels will be in the thick of the medal hunt this weekend, and likely will end up no worse then 2nd. Pool challenges from Toronto and BT Warriors, but that shouldn't prevent Angels from being the #1 seed in that group
4 BT Warrriors 4 4 9 Battle likley between themselves and TFC Friday at 2:30 which could be a deciding game to determine who gets the #2 seed from this pool
5 Toronto Fastpitch 5 4 9 Will need to play consistent across pool play to escape to the bracket, as mentioned big game Friday afternoon...
6 Vaughan Vikings 6 3 6 Vikings have 6 players attending nationals as call-ups. This group will look to make a strong showing together at provincals after skipping the NQ tournament last month
7 Fieldhouse Raiders 7 7 - If you have been following Fieldhouse online... they've been impressing over the last 6 weeks. They could surprise and get out of their group this weekend
8 Waterloo Ghosts White 8 6 - Will be in a battle with the two above them to get to bracket play this weekend. Their season continues as National host in a couple of weeks
9 Brampton Blazers (A) 9 7 - Blazers will likely need to beat the team below them here on this list to make the bracket this weekend
10 Guelph Gators 10 5 10 Guelph will look to perform well this weekend, the last for many of this group that have been together for a few years now

U19 Tier 2

Qualifier weekend two weeks back showcased some teams that have been largely ommitted from this list all season. Now heading into provincials this weekend we have 8 teams competing for spots at the Eastern Canadians, and 14 others playing out the season in the B group provincials. We feel that upwards of six teams in the "A" pool realistcially could win it all... and the B group is also wide open with several good solid teams playing in those pools as well...

Rank Team Last High Low Comments
1 Tavistock Athletics 4 1 8 Winners of the Ajax qualifer the Athletics will head into London this week with our nod as the #1 team in Ontario. They however aren't a lock to medal as this "A" group is full of really good teams
2 Napanee Express 2 2 8 Silver medal winners in Ajax. Napanee is in the weaker of the two pools this weekend, and that should get them a nice seed heading into bracket play Saturday evening.
3 Guelph Gators 6 3 - Gators placed fourth in Drumbo, so why do we have them here? Answer is simple they have been playing well over the last 6 weeks, and we think they have the bats, and pitching to get it done this weekend.
4 London Lightning Red 1 1 8 Bronze medal winners in Ajax. London has been consistent all season. However they haven't dominated anyone. We expect they make the bracket playoff for sure, then it could be a case of who they match up against. Two things about this team - playing at home, and they know how to win close games
5 Ontario Yankees Sr. - 1 - Yankees captured the gold medal in Drumbo, only losing once to Lucan on the Saturday. Tournament draw helped them a bit, but the bigger help was the pitching they had that weekend.
6 Lucan Athletics - 6 - What a time to make their first appearance on the rankings. A silver medal in Drumbo, wins against many top-10 teams. Lucan will be the underdog again this weekend in a really tough pool
7 UTM East 10 7 - 4th place in Ajax, means a spot in :"A" this wekeend. Will need 1 or more wins to get out of the pool play. #1 pitcher can likely provide that.
8 UTM Morriston - 8 - UTM's 2nd team in the "A" bracket. They got it done when they needed to in Drumbo, now they will look to be the darkhorse team in the first pool this weekend in London
9 UTM Brantford 3 2 9 Two and out for Brantford. Can they turn it around this wekeend in London?
10 Palmerston Marlins 8 2 10 Marlins have a tough pool, with UTM, Port Perry & LaSalle this coming weekend in London, one or more good teams won't escape pool play

U16 Tier 1

Tier 1 Championships were played out over four days last weekend in Cambridge under a very similar format to the NQ event a few weeks back. At the event this past weekend Mississauga North, & Waterloo Gold successfully managed a return to the final, whereas some of the other players in the playoff bracket were different this time out vs the NQ event a few weeks back.

1 Miss North Tigers 03' 1 1 2 Hard to deny the case for either the Tigers or the Ghosts at the top of this list, both teams have been hugely successful over the last 6 weeks. Tigers keep our #1 spot, but they'll be Ontario 2 at Nationals in Calgary
2 Waterloo Ghosts Gold 2 1 6 Provincial Gold Medalists, like the Tigers above them only one loss this past weekend and it was vs each other as they split those meetings 1-1
3 Brampton Blazers Gold 4 2 8 Consistent team all year, always seemed to be around come Sunday. Congrats to the Blazers on a successful 2019 summer season
4 Toronto Lady Mets 03' 5 3 5 Mets wrap up the season with the #4 spot on our rankings. Just shy of the podium at the big two events this summer.
5 UTM Revolution 2K4 3 3 - ON3 at Nationals, Revolution will look to get healthy in the next 10 days. Strong 04' group that can all return to U16 next season
6 Oakville Angels 7 2 7 Angels qualified for the bracket play this past weekend. Team has fun every weekend, love seeing them on and off the field of play. Congrats Angels!
7 Halton Hawks 7 5 10 Injuries really came up and got the Hawks at the wrong time.
8 Kingston Gaels 9 8 - Kingston had a narrow miss this past weekend, but had a strong final month of the season to notch their spot on our list
9 Port Perry Angels 10 9 - Angels are 1st year team, who will get bigger and stronger heading to 2020
10 Brantford Bobcats - 9 - Bobcats can all return next season, should be a major player next season

U16 Tier 2

Qualifer weekend wrapped on Sunday July 28th... and with those results now underfoot we have a different looking list as we pause and these teams get ready for their Grand Championship event in Stratford next week...Three sites and three champions all worth a look as leaders heading into "A" provincials.

Rank Team Last High Low Comments
1 Brampton Blazers Burgundy 2 1 - Winners of C qualifier on home field, the Blazers have what it takes as to many on this list to be the provincial champions this season
2 Vaughan Vikings 04 5 3 - Silver medal behind our choice for top spot, this week we make a case for the Vikings to be the 2nd best team in the land as of right now.
3 Oakville Angels 3 1 5 Played their way into the undefeated game, won that but then lost against a Diggers team that was having a great Sunday run.
4 Brantford Bobcats 8 4 5 Bobcats win Qualifier site A with a great gold medal game vs Springfield
5 Springfield Brewers - 10 - An early loss meant the Brewers needed to win four straight to get to the final vs the Bobcats where they came up on the short side of a 4-2 defeat
6 Windsor Wildcats Black 1 1 6 Wildcats 1st real look at Ontario play this season, saw some competition for this group that had been our top pick for the last number of weeks
7 Aurora Diggers - 7 - Gold for the Diggers this past weekend, perhaps the most unexpected top medal winner of the three
8 Waterloo Ghosts Black 4 4 7 4-straight wins for Waterloo after an opening loss to MSW this past weekend. Well coached team
9 Palmerston Marlins - 9 - An unexpected weekend perhaps for some, but these Marlins always believed
10 Milton Bats 6 3 8 A pool for the Bats, and we will see what they can do to build on that for the grand championship

U14 Tier 1

Hard to believe but save for the teams attending the upcoming U14 Nationals in Montreal... the season is over for most of these teams unless they have US travel plans in the coming weeks. Was fun to watch this group over the season, and we wish all those heading to Montreal the best success!

Rank Team Last High Low Comments
1 Vaughan Vikings 05 5 1 5 Back on top as provincial champions. They looked really good this past weekend in Windsor, and we will consider them to be int the mix for National medal this coming week in Montrreal
2 Halton Hawks 05 3 2 4 Silver medal at Provincials this weekend for the Hawks. Perfect record in pool play, only losses of the weekend came against the Vikings
3 Whitby Eagles 05 2 2 4 Bronze finish for the Eagles, some impressive wins this weekend. We know they can play with the teams above them on this list for sure
4 Kitchener Klassics Black 10 4 - Great way to cap of the season for Kitchener. Only losses on the weekend were to the #1 and #3 team on this list
5 LaSalle Athletics 05 1 1 - A perfect pool play record of 4-0-0, but then some tough sledding in the bracket kept the Eagles out of the medal hunt
6 Fieldhouse Raiders 4 4 - Another strong showing for Fieldhouse. Two weekends in July this team stepped up with some nice play
7 Breslau Fury 6 2 7 A second straight tough draw had the Fury finishing with a 2-2- record in pool play and missing the bracket play.
8 LaSalle Athletics 06 7 6 - Good showing for this 1st year team. Expect good things next season
9 Miss North Tigers 05 8 10 - The season continues for the Tigers due to their success at the NQ event
10 Aurora Diggers 9 5 9 Diggers will be a strong force next season, possible pre-season top 2?

U14 Tier 2

Qualifer weekend in mid July helped solidify our thoughts on the U14 Tier 2 division ahead of the Grand Championships. It has been a very successful season for the #1 team on this list, but they will be challenged at provincials and in the one game that matters on Sunday anything can happen! Here is our current top-10 list:

Rank Team Last High Low Comments
1 Etobicoke Mayhem 1 1 - Gold at their qualifier site. Head into provincials as the clear first choice
2 Arthur Twisters 2 2 - Have had a number of cracks at beating the #1, but right now the leader seems to have the edge.
3 Miss North Tigers 06 3 1 3 Our first two teams have been pretty much locked into their spots all season long, but we did have the Tigers as our #1 earlier this summer. With that and a nice haul of medal wins this season, Tigers can't be omitted from any gold medal conversation
4 Vaughan Vikings 06 4 2 5 On any given Sunday... on any given field, its possible you will see the Vikings battling to the end!
5 Oakville Angels 06 5 3 6 Angels are #5 as we head into the provincial championship
6 Tavistock Athletics 9 6 - .700 winning percentage in GVLSA, and some nice tournament runs.
Palmerston Marlins - 7 - Put together a great weekend at the qualifier tournament
8 Wyoming Lady Wranglers 7 7 - Solid showing for Wyoming battling through the qualifier bracket
9 Kitchener Klassics White 8 4 9 Still on the list for consideration, another solid 1st year team
10 Windsor Wildcats - 10 - Another team with a nice run qualifer weekend, adding them to our list this week

Following the completion of the U12 Big Show Tournament this past weekend here are the updated U12 rankings ahead of the Qualifier weekends coming up next. The flip-flop between the Coyotes and Hurricanes continues, however for the first time since May we have a team in the middle of those two power teams...

Rank Team Last High Low Comments
1 Cambridge Coyotes 2 1 7 Cambriidge wins the Big Show A Division, with a one run win over Waterloo
2 Waterloo Ghosts 07' 5 3 6 Season high for the Ghosts as they are our #2 team following Sunday wins over Vaughan and MSW. In the final a run shy of knocking off Cambridge as well
3 Mississauga SW Hurricanes 07 1 1 3 Not touched in pool play, Hurricanes lost to a red hot Waterloo team in a great semifinal match at the Big Show
4 Oakville Angels 07 9 4 10 Always on our list this season, this past weekend they showed very well with some missing players. Watch out for the Angels at qualifiers
5 Chatham Eagles Gold 7 5 - Chatham qualified for A this past weekend, and play a high scoring game vs #4 on our list in the opening playoff round last weekend at the Big Show tournament
6 Wilmot Thunder - 6 - Gold medal winners in the B pool, the Thunder only lost once all weekend
7 Vaughan Vikings Sr 4 2 7 Battled Cambridge hard in pool play, and also looked good the rest of the weekend, they were beat by the red hot Waterloo team mentioned above.
8 Brampton Blazers Burgundy - 8 - Impressive tournament list for this first year team. Likely should have been on this list for a few weeks before now. Those above likely don't want to face the Blazers in a qualifier game
9 LaSalle Athletics 07 3 3 9 Nobody had a tougher schedule than LaSalle this past weekend.
10 Waterloo Ghosts 08 9 5 - Holding down the final spot on this list are the Ghosts 08'. However this spot likely could have also gone to Milton, Halton, and some others as well.
