A successful weekend for our Bantam Tier 1 team as they won the silver medal at the Provincial Championship this past weekend in Cambridge. The tournament was the culmination of the 2018 season for the 16-Tier 1 teams who have battled each other all over the province since the beginning of May. This group of 16-teams was perhaps one of the best top-to-bottom that the Tier 1 division has seen in many years.
2K2 went a perfect 3-0-0 in pool play with wins over Miss North 02' 6-5, which was highlighted by a come-from behind win with three-runs in the 5th inning, and then the go-ahead run in the 7th. McKenna Kelly pitched a complete game in this match, and fired 13K's and allowed zero earned runs. The second game of day-1, UTM again used a late rally to come from behind to beat the Halton Hawks by a score of 5-4. Jessie O'Donnell led the team with 2RBI, and again McKenna Kelly pitched the full 7-innings, with 11K's and again zero earned runs. Saturday, the final pool play game, Revolution defeated the Toronto Lady Mets 5-1, Brooke Cressman and Jessie O'Donnell each with 2RBI's, McKenna Kelly earned the win, firing 10K's and allowing just 1 earned run in the 7th inning.
Playoffs started Saturday night, and UTM matched up against Brantford Bobcats. The game was an 11-1 final score, which put the 2K2 team into the undefeated game. Shelby Miller had 3-hits, 3RBI's, Brooke Cressman also had 3-hits, McKenna Kelly earned her 4th win of the tournament with a complete game, 7K's and allowed only 4hits and 1 earned run. In the undefeated game, UTM beat Vaughan by a score of 9-3, the middle of the order provided 5RBI's with Cressman (2), Drover (1) and Hill (2). Shelby Miller had 3-hits to lead the club. McKenna Kelly earned her 5th win of the weekend, pitching 7-innings allowing only 2 earned runs (making it 3 for the whole weekend).
Championship game, saw a rematch with the Vikings who earned their way back beating Waterloo. This game was a back and forth affair and featured all kinds of offense, and big plays. Tanis Hall had a big 2-out 2B hit, driving in 2RBI to get UTM back to a 7-7 tie in the 6th inning. Nat Clemens, Tanis Drover and Shelby Miller all had 2-hits to pace the team on offense. Some defensive errors cost Revolution some runs, and it was a run in the 7th that gave the Vikings a 8-7 win and the gold medal at provincials. McKenna Kelly held UTM in the game the final 4-innings, and ended up with the loss, allowing 5 earned runs over the game.
Congrats 2K2 --- silver medalist at provincials is a great accomplishment. The team beat 3- of the teams that will be attending Nationals in August (Vaughan, Brantford and Miss North 02'). We look forward to a fun and exciting weekend next at the Ontario Summer Games! To all the players (Meg, Tanis D, Tanis H, Shelby, Jessie, Tyla, Natalie, Mikaela, Brooke, Makenna & McKenna), coaches (Randy & Ryan) and team manager (Diane) well done!!!! Thank you so much for your positive representation of the UTM brand.
